The "Look" Meme
Current WIP, hmmm... I dunno how 'current' this piece is; I more or less abandoned it about a year ago, but I have been thinking about resuming it.
This is a section surrounding the first ocurrence of 'look' in a sequel I'm writing to astolat's "The World Turned Upside Down".
Fandom: Master and Commander
Pairing: Jack/Stephen
“Ah, Stephen, there you are!” cried Jack at second breakfast, with a gleam in his eye that the doctor had not observed for some weeks. Since the discovery of his condition, in truth. “Did you see this?” Jack pointed to the article in the Transactions he had been reading. “A fellow in the Royal Society says he may have found a cure! A way to turn people like me back to our original form!”
“Yes, my dear, I did indeed look over that most interesting report.” Stephen did not mention that he had been in correspondence with the gentleman himself for some months about the possible treatment. “Would there be coffee, at all?” Drinking a cup of the invigorating brew, and enjoying a slice of toast generously slathered with jam, Stephen watched as Jack eagerly pored over the journal. “I beg you will not refine too much upon this hope, upon this slim meagre grasping chance of a so-called 'cure',” he said.
Jack looked up, a little surprised. “According to this report, his initial results have been promising.”
“By 'promising' he means that his patients have not died. Or have not died yet, I should say.”
“Oh. I thought it said here that they were even changing back.”
“Yes, yes,” continued Stephen impatiently. “In some cases the individuals treated lost those anatomical attributes, those indicators of sex, that they were not born with, but there has been no evidence of their regaining their original characteristics. To be rendered neither male nor female, not a man nor a woman, but some androgynous ambivalent halfway creature of no defined form does not strike me as a tolerable outcome.”

And check it out - I not only opened the doc; I made a bunch of corrections, and even wrote a whole new half-sentence! Go me \o/ :D

I know what that's like, though. I sit there with a WIP open for weeks, and when I get around to finally deciding it really does need to be finished, I edit stuff, add a whole sentence and... nothing more for several weeks.
I had a WIP of just over 100 words once, and when I got hit by a bout of insomnia, I managed to add something like 1500 words AND post it. And all it took was not being able to sleep one night.
Insomnia: Fandom would be dead without it. :D

Late at night, the inhibitions go down, and the words come out. Unfortunately, maturity and exhaustion has defeated my insomnia, and risen those inhibitive barriers :(

(Anyway, who cares about 'maturity' when we're talking about fic writing?!)

And I hardly drink myself, so I can completely understand not swinging that way.
But there has to be some way of getting you to finish this! :D

Well, one was a fragment, but it was a POB-style fragment*, so counts. *g*
If I can just keep away from the email, who knows? I may get another whole section written!
Without benefit of drink even (except the mocha. I think mochas help more with the writing anyway. Alcohol just makes me sleepy and entirely incapable of typing :-)
*And one POB-style run-on should count for a whole paragraph (sometimes they are - I have seen 'em!)
no subject
And of course a POB-style fragment counts. :D
(For myself, it's the keeping myself away from anything online AND not playing solitaire. No wonder I haven't written much recently!)

It's very depressing.
But somewhat more productive.
Not a lot.
But now I am mesermised by your icon.
I wonder if mesmerised is included?
A whole paragraph AND the start of another. Woo-hoo I am UNSTOPPABLE! Until I stop.
The dishes and now the laundry are calling me...

That icon is one of only two animated ones I have. No; three. Stephen whistling and it's a hard life lusting after Sharpe, but someone's got to do it... :D
no subject
I like Stephen whistling - there's a gorgeous one of him and Jack whistling back and forth at each other, but I really want to see the lusting after Sharpe one now!
Do you know, I used the internet for decades - decades! - without knowledge of fanfic. But it was a much less distracting internet, to be sure. Not even LOLcats, can you imagine? :D :D :D
no subject
And I'll stop emailing you, then. But first, here's the lusting after Sharpe one - the first animated GIF I uploaded... :D

It'd be nicer, if only the image changes weren't so quick (in one of those shots a certain area looks quite well worn ... by a certain part of the anatomy? Needs closer, longer, more detailed study, hmmm.... :D :D :D)
no subject
I know, right? I didn't make it, though, and nor do I know whence the shots came, or I'd go find the relevant one for more, ahem, detailed study. *looks innocent*

8500?! Apart from my two multi-part monsters (both aberrations, surely!), my longest fic clocked in at about 2500 words. I think. certainly under 3000.
GO YOU!!

And astolat's original, which this is just a sequel, was nearly 20K words, so yeah, has to be a bit epic :-)
Also, my wp counts funny - some punctuation marks get counted as their own word. Very odd. So no doubt that figure's quite a bit inflated.
But yeah, it's looking like the longest thing I've ever written, which seems odd. Could explain why it's taking so long to finish! :D
no subject
And I know what you mean about wp counting weirdly - I swear that mine counts my ~ ~ ~ spacers as three words - not to mention the HTML tags getting counted as words, too. I always seem to lose words between posting on DW and posting on the AO3 due to that. :D

I hope to post the first part of this soon, since it looks like I may actually finish it woo-hoo \o/
