Thing to keep in mind when reading the first book - there's lots of sailing jargon. It's OK if you don't really understand it; you can just sort of skim through it. Stephen Maturin never really understands it and he gets along fine :-)

But the first scene is absolutely wonderful and there is no sailing jargon, so it is all good :D
